The Benefits of Spring Cleaning Your Car

The days are getting longer, the last of the snow is starting to melt away, we don’t want to jinx it, but it seems like spring is finally here! Something about the change of seasons and getting out of that winter-funk always motivates people. You see more people out-and-about, walking their dogs and exercising. You clean up your house and get rid of that clutter that’s been building up all winter. And most importantly, you get your car ready for those summer days of going to the beach and driving around with the windows down! To get the most out of your car in the summer you have to start preparing in the spring. Let’s go over all the benefits of spring cleaning your car!

Exterior

We’ll start out by talking about what experiences the biggest beating during the harsh winter months, your car’s exterior. Right now, your car is probably covered in a layer of white, wintery dust. This layer is made up of road salt, dirt, mud, and all sorts of contaminants. Not only is it not a great look for your car, but it can also damage your car if you didn’t winterize your vehicle beforehand. We covered how and why you should winterize your car in a previous blog if you need a refresher of what it entails!

To get rid of all the winter remnants you’ll want to take your car to a professional car wash. A professional car wash will give your vehicle a much more thorough clean than if you were to do it yourself, and it will get all those hard to reach places under the car that you wouldn’t even think to clean.

Waxing & Clay Treatments

While you’re at the carwash getting your car cleaned you should also consider getting a wax and/or clay treatment. A clay treatment is the only thing that is guaranteed to get all the winter remnants off, and a wax will protect it from any summer contaminants.

Summertime in New England is like one big construction zone. It seems like every street you go down there’s road work going on. Well, all that dust and dirt flies right off the road and directly onto your car, which can really damage your exterior if you aren’t protected by a wax coat. Other things like bugs getting smushed onto your car, and then getting left to bake in the sun can also cause damage. Getting a fresh coat of wax on there will protect your paint from these things, and on top of that give it a beautiful shine!

Don’t Forget the Interior!

After a long winter, your interior is probably covered in road salt, sand, dirt, and may even have some water damage. That being said, springtime is the perfect time for a good scrub. Take your floor mats right out of your car and give them a nice shampoo. While they’re out, give your entire car a good vacuum. Vacuuming without the floor mats will allow you to get every single nook and cranny. Or, save the hassle and time it will take for you to clean your interior yourself and let us help you out! You’ll be in and out and no time and your interior will be looking good as new.

If you want even more protection for your car’s interior, ask about our Gtechniq treatment. Gtechniq is a product that we apply to the floors and/or seats of your car that acts as a protective shield and completely waterproofs your surfaces. This treatment is perfect to get right before summer so your interior will be protected from water damage when you’re coming from the beach or pool and have to sit in your car. It’s available for both fabric and leather interiors.

There truly is nothing better than riding around town on a warm day, with your windows rolled down and your car sparkling clean. So, schedule your detail today to beat the big springtime rush and get your car ready for the summer!

Professional Car Wash vs. Self Car Wash; Which is Better?

How often do you go for a car wash? Most car owners don’t wash their car nearly as much as they should. If you want to keep your car’s condition as close to perfect as possible, we suggest doing it once every other week.  It may sound unnecessary, especially during winter weather when it seems like your car is just going to get dirty again the next day, but it is vital. The best way you can get your car clean is at a professional carwash. If you’re not convinced just yet, we have highlighted the top 4 reasons why you should go to a professional car wash rather than wash it yourself!

Road Salt

Speaking of things damaging your car’s exterior, let’s talk about your car’s worst enemy: road salt. Road salt will cause more damage to your car than any other outside element, and if you’re living here in New England, it’s impossible to avoid. Take one look at the cars you drive by every day during the winter, chances are a lot of them are covered in that wintery white dust. Not only can road salt damage your paint and exterior, but it can also cause significant damage to your vehicle’s undercarriage. The only way to truly keep your car safe from road salt is to go to a professional car wash. A professional car wash reaches all the places underneath your car that you’ve never even thought about cleaning!

Prevent Permanent Damage & Preserve Value

Washing Your car by hand can be a lot riskier than you think. Using the wrong kind of soap or sponge can cause a lot of damage. Many people think that using household dish soap to wash your car is okay, but that is not true. Using any kind of soap that is not specifically made for cars can strip the clear coat from your car and cause permanent damage. The same thing goes for the brush or sponge you use. Using one that’s too rough can create thousands of tiny scratches on your car’s exterior which will only get worse and worse as time goes on. Once the washing is done, many people don’t realize that they then have to dry their car. Leaving water on your car’s surface that is full of the chemicals and minerals you used to wash it can create water spots, and let’s face it, the last thing you want to do when you’ve just finished cleaning your car is to go through the trouble of wiping every inch of it dry. At a car wash your car is blasted with our very powerful blow dryers that will dry your car better than any rag ever will! Professional car washes are made to avoid all of these problems and keep your car sparkly-clean and damage free.

Better for the Environment

When it comes to washing your car yourself or bringing it to a car wash, bringing it to a car wash it much better for the environment. Unlike driveway washing, professional carwashes have proper draining systems to keep harmful chemicals and dirty water from disrupting nature and have calculated the exact amount of water and soap that is needed to wash a car to minimize waste. Some car washes even recycle their water!

Save Money

Some people believe that things are cheaper when you do it yourself, but when it comes to washing your car that’s false! Instead of spending money on the right kind of soap, sponges’ brushes and rags, and the extra expense on your water bill, when you go to a car wash you are just charged one flat rate, and we promise you will get more bang for your buck. And, you can save even more by purchasing a wash book from us!

Going to a professional car wash saves you time, money, and is safer for your car… what more could you ask for?! So, the next time your thinking about dedicating half a day to wash your car yourself, just remember these few things and come pay a visit to us!

How to Prevent & Remove Water Spots on Your Car

Compared to rust, tree sap, tar and other chemicals that contaminate your car’s paint, water spots may seem like no big deal, but in fact, they are just as harmful, if not more. You may not realize it, but water is full of contaminants, pollutants, and debris that can very easily damage your vehicle. We’re going to go over how water spots are caused, how you can prevent them, and how you can get rid of existing ones!

Types & Causes

In simple terms, a water spot occurs when contaminants in a droplet of water dry on your car’s surface, there are a few different types depending on what was in the water and how it dried. Here are the three different types of water spots:

water spotsHard Water Spot:  These are the most common types of water spots and are sometimes known as “hard water spots.” Hard water spots are mineral or dirt deposits that lay on the surface of your car’s paint. They can occur when tap water, that is very rich in natural minerals, sits on your car’s surface for long periods of time. This happens when you wash your car with a hose and do not completely dry it off after, or when your parked car is being sprayed repeatedly by a nearby sprinkler system. When he drops dry, they turn into a dry-chalky substance that is difficult to remove.

Bonded Mineral: Bonded Mineral water spots are a little more severe than hard water spots. Bonded mineral water spots are caused by water droplets that have a higher concentration of minerals, which make them more difficult to remove. The minerals bond to the surface of the car and can sometimes even corrode to the clear coat of your car’s paint. Some can even leave small stains or make your car’s paint look dull even after removal. Bonded Mineral water spots are most commonly caused by acid rain with high amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids.

Etching: Etching water spots occur when water droplets dry onto your car from being heated by the sun. They are essentially “baked” onto your car’s surface. Etching water spots are the most difficult water spots to get rid of, and if handled the wrong way can cause major permanent damage to your car.

How can I get rid of water spots?

The difficulty of removing water spots ranges a lot.  Sometimes all you need is to run your car through a good carwash. We really want to stress the fact that you should go to a professional carwash instead of trying to wash them off yourself because washing your car on your own could be the reason you got them in the first place! Our professional carwashes have powerful blow dryers that will dry your car off better than anything else. And then, if you get out of the car wash and realize the spots are still there just ask one of our professional detailers! They’ll be able to tell you exactly what kind of water spots they are and how we can get rid of them.

Seeking out professional help is always the best answer when taking care of your vehicle. For the most stubborn water spots, water sanding may be necessary, and as we mentioned before, trying to do this yourself or finding some online hack to get rid of the spots could cause irreversible damage to your car.

water spotsHow can I prevent water spots in the future?

The absolute best way you can protect your car from water spots is with a wax. A wax coating acts like a barrier that protects your car from all outside elements and contaminants. Here at Pro-Wash our clay bar treatment is our most bulletproof waxing service. The clay bar will thoroughly clean your car surface of any existing contaminants and then will continue to protect it from any new contaminants latching on in the future. No matter what touches your car’s surface, your paint will remain in clean, perfect condition underneath the wax layer.

It’s Time to Winterize Your Car!

Us New Englanders know how harsh winter can be and it’s equally harsh on our cars. From slippery roads to frozen windows, operating your car in the winter can be a hassle. However, there are a few precautions you can take to winterize your car and make sure you end the season with the same shiny, clean car you started with! Preparing your car for winter will protect it from any unnecessary damage and hopefully make this winter a little more bearable!

Protect Your Interior

Your car seats and interior also take a hard hit in the winter. When you get into your car, wet with snow and sleet, your car seat fabric is bound to get water stains. Even worse, if there’s moisture in your interior when cold weather hits it can freeze and begin to crack the material. You may be thinking “Well that’s why I got leather seats! Everything wipes right off!” But in fact, leather can suffer some serious damage in the winter as well. To keep your seats protected you need to get your interior treated by a professional before winter. We use products that will completely waterproof your seats, kill bacteria and protect from stains and cracking!

Keep Your Carpets Clean

Most people think their car floors and carpets become a lost cause in the winter.  With all the snow and salt being tracked in and out all day there’s no way you can protect your carpets, right? Wrong. Floor mats are an amazing investment that will keep your floors protected from all outside elements. Liquid, debris, salt, dirt you name it, when you remove those mats at the end of the winter you will still have your beautiful, stain-free carpets underneath! They’re amazing for the winter, but if you wish, you can keep them in year-round! Affordable protection and an incredibly easy clean up, what more could you ask for!

Wax On

winterize your carSo, we’ve gone over all the different ways your car’s interior can get damaged, let’s go over what can happen to your car’s exterior in the winter. Protecting the outside of your vehicle may be the most important step you can take to winterize your car. Things like road salt, water spots, and brake dust can cling onto your car’s surface and become almost impossible to get rid of. The harsh outdoor elements can even dull your paint job! The only way to keep your vehicle’s exterior protected this winter is with a clay bar treatment. A clay bar treatment is a fairly simple process that provides ultimate protection. During the wax treatment, an auto professional will glide a clay bar all over your car’s paint surface to create a protective clear coat, while also removing any existing contaminants. We recommend getting a clay bar treatment twice a year. Once in the late fall to prepare for winter, and once in the spring to get all winter debris and contaminants off.

Regular Maintenance

For some reason, people generally feel like they don’t have to get their car washed in the winter as much as they do during other seasons. It may be because they think it’s just going to get dirty again anyway, or maybe driving around a sparkly clean car is just more appealing when it’s warm out. But the truth is you should continue to get your car washed regularly year-round, no matter how snowy it gets! You may think washing your car in the winter is pointless because it’s just going to get covered in that white wintery dust again pretty quickly, but regular washes do make a huge difference. Your car is exposed to just as many, if not more harmful elements in the winter than any other season. You should continue your regular car washes hopefully twice, or at the very least once a month throughout the entire winter.

If you take the time to properly winterize your car, you can be sure that it will last you for many winters to come. Act now and book your appointment with us today, because we all know how fast winter can creep up on us, it will be here before you know it! How Often Should You Wash Your Car?

car with "wash me" written on the dirty windowHow Often Should You Wash Your Car?

There are two types of car owners: one that refuses to have a speck of dirt on their car, and the other that doesn’t wash their car until a stranger writes “WASH ME” in the dirt of their window! Neither of these extremes are ideal, or necessary. As a matter of fact, there is a happy-medium of how often you should wash your car, and it depends on a few different factors. Cleaning your car regularly will not only make your vehicle aesthetically pleasing but will also help prevent any permanent damage that could decrease its value. Let’s go over the most important factors you should consider when deciding how often you should wash your car!

Where do you live?

Do you live in an urban area or city? Near the ocean? Or maybe in a wooded area with lots of trees, insects and birds? If you live in any of these areas you should consider washing your car often, preferably every other week. How can living in these areas damage your car you ask? Well…

  • Urban areas are often full of pollution and contaminated air. These pollutants can be damaging enough on their own, but when they mix with natural elements like rain, bug splatters and bird droppings they can cause even more damage like rust and paint corrosion.
  • Ocean water can damage your car the same way road salt does in the winter. The high amount of salt in seawater will not only corrode paint but will also cause your car’s undercarriage to rust which can cause serious damage that will cost big bucks to fix.
  • Living in a wooded area can expose your car to many contaminants like tree sap, bird droppings and bug splatters. If any of these things are left on your car’s surface for a long period of time they can stain and cause discoloration.

What’s the climate like?

Climate plays a huge factor in how often you should wash your car. If you’re from the New England area you know that throughout the year we experience a wide range of climates. We get the coldest snow, sleet and ice in the winter, as well as the sweltering heat of the summer.  So just like the weather changes throughout the year, the way you wash your car should as well.

  • Keeping your car clean throughout the winter months is very important. Road salt, snow and moisture can easily cause rust, and once rust begins to form on your car its hard to stop. Professionals suggest washing your car at least every other week in the winter to prevent this from happening.
  • Heat can speed up the damage that contaminants like bird droppings and bug splatters can cause. When the heat combines with these things it doesn’t take long for them to stick onto your car like glue, making it very difficult to get off. If you live in a hot climate and find that your car often has bug splatters and bird droppings on it, you should try to wash your car once a week. If bug splatters and bird droppings are moderate, then you can get away with washing your car every other week.

Storage

Where do you store your car when you’re not using it? Parking your car in a garage is obviously the best way to protect it from the elements and will also warrant for less washing. If your car is in a garage most of the time you can get away with washing your car twice or even once a month. If you park your car outside, then you will need to wash your car more frequently. At least every other week, or if possible every week. You should obviously take into account the climate as well.

By now you’re probably tired of hearing all the different things that can damage your car and just want one solid answer of how often you should wash your car. The general rule of thumb is every other week. Washing your car every other week is fairly easy to keep up with and is enough to prevent any serious damage. However, we highly recommend weekly washes during warm weather. Heat does more damage than good to vehicles, if you’d like to learn more about how to protect your car in the heat please read our blog post How to Protect Your Car Interior This Summer.

Bi-weekly and weekly washing may seem like a lot, but you can save money by purchasing one of our wash books! Purchase one here or give us a call at 603-964-7291 to learn more!

How to Protect Your Car Interior This Summer

We’ve all had this experience before; you open your car door on a hot summer day and you get hit with an awful wave of heat. You step in and crank up the air conditioner, and wait for what seems like forever for your car to reach a tolerable temperature.
That unbearable amount of heat you feel when you first open the door is what your car is sitting in all day long! It would be foolish to think your car interior isn’t getting damaged from being exposed to that for hours on end. So what can you do to protect your car from the heat eating away at it? We are here to discuss few simple ways you can save your car from those blazing sun rays.

Windshield Shades

One of the easiest ways you can protect your car interior this summer is with a windshield shade. Excessive sun exposure can cause your dashboard to discolor or even crack, a windshield shade will prevent these damages.  The shade easily attaches to your windshield and protects the entire dashboard area of your car. For even more protection you can buy shades for your back window, and all of your passenger windows. Using shades will not only protect your interior from sun damage, but will also block out the UV rays and keep your car much cooler for your return!

Keep Your Car Interior Clean

Keeping your car interior clean year round is a great habit. One thing you want to pay extra attention to when cleaning in the summer is your car floor. Your car floor mats are the home of every drink you’ve spilled, crumb you’ve dropped, and piece of dirt you’ve ever tracked into the car. Not only will the summer heat bring out the foul smells of all these things, but it will also dry up these crumbs and spills and make them much harder to clean.
That being said, summer is the perfect time to give your car a deep carpet cleaning. Cleaning the actual carpet of your car is important, but you do not want to forget about your floor mats as well! Floor mats take the brunt of the floor’s wear and tear, so cleaning them regularly is necessary. It is also a good idea to regularly replace your floor mats. If you notice they’re sliding around, or your usual vacuuming just doesn’t seem to be helping them, it’s time for them to be replaced.

Seat Covers

While we’ve covered the windows, the dashboard and floors of your car we will now discuss how to protect perhaps the most important part of your car interior, the seats. Whether your seats are fabric or leather, both can suffer damage from sun exposure. Fading is an obvious consequence of sun exposure, but it can cause more expensive damages to your leather seats as well. When leather is exposed to direct sunlight and heat day after day the leather can one day dry out and begin to crack.  Seat covers can be a solution to these issues. Seat covers will protect your upholstery from the sun’s powerful rays, and not to mention will make car cleanups much easier. If your hesitant about using seat covers year round, you should consider using them at least in the summer when your they will suffer the most damage.

Routine maintenance year round is the best way to keep your car interior in pristine condition, but we realize that sometimes it can be a hassle! If you have any further questions about how you can protect your car, request a detail or give us a call at 603-964-7291!

According to AAA, US drivers spent an estimated 15.4 billion is rust repairs caused by salt over the past five years. If this winter has been particularly snowy for you, it is time to wash and wax your vehicle, because you for sure do not want be included in this statistic.

Interior Cleaning

Keeping the interior of your vehicle can be a burden after a snow-filled winter, due to an absurd amount of mud and salt which found it’s way inside your vehicle. Thoroughly cleaning the interior of your vehicle is extremely important, because believe it or not the mats in your car act as a sponge of sorts, absorbing all the salt and filth brought into your vehicle which in turn accelerates the rusting process. Obviously, rusting on the interior of your vehicle is the last thing you want, so it is quite important to scrub down the inside of your car, before larger issues rear their ugly head. In addition to getting rid of the gunk your car has built up over the winter, cleaning your interior also removes bugs or bacteria which are often brought into our cars from our hands and clothes! Best Car Cleaning Practices

Keeping your vehicle tidy, inside and out, is something many people all over the world practice, yet not many individuals think of the intricacies within keeping your car clean.  Cleaning your car may seem like a simple and monotonous procedure, whether you’re cleaning it yourself or going to a car wash. Little do most people know, there are actually several things one should keep in mind when cleaning their vehicle. There are numerous practices to live by when it comes to maintaining the cleanliness of your vehicle, and this blog will assist in outlining the most important of these practices.

Interior

The interior of your vehicle is a place many people make a habit of trying to keep clean, due to the fact that is where they’ll be spending the most time with their vehicle. As clean as some people try to keep their cars, there are lesser known practices that you should follow in order to maintain your vehicle’s interior hygiene.

  • Winter is Coming, Be Wary of the Salt
    • With winter quickly approaching, salt will be in abundance to inhibit the ice that can be notoriously and slyly dangerous. A downside of this preventative measure, is that salt can and will expedite the decomposing of your floor mat. Make sure you clean your mats as often as necessary in order to stop said salt from eating away your car’s carpets!
  • Beware of Dust & Bugs
    • If one neglects cleaning their car, things could quickly go from bad to worse. A problem that can and does occur if you ignore the interior of your car’s hygiene is dust and bugs. If left unattended, dead skin will accumulate inside your vehicle and create a plethora of unwanted dust. Coupled with that, can often come bugs. Bugs can live in your car’s carpet if you simply do not wash it, so it is better to be safe than sorry in that regard.

Exterior

If the interior is your place to care for, the exterior is show off to everyone else. Now, we’re not going to tell you to consistently clean the outside of your car, because that would be too obvious. Beyond cleaning your car via hand wash or through a car wash, is something called waxing your vehicle. Oftentimes you are encouraged to wax your car to keep it shiny and looking as new as the day you bought it. Yet, this would be a mistake.

  • Don’t Forget About Clay
    • Using a clay bar on your car as opposed to just a hand waxing is extremely vital to your car’s exterior health. Using a clay bar twice a year thoroughly provides your vehicle with an extensive and in-depth cleaning of its exterior. In contrast to the highly recommended clay bar method, waxing your car often can leave scratches and remove paint on your car if not properly clayed.
  • Avoid in Depth Cleaning When It Is Scorching Hot Outside
    • A warm car surface causes soap, wax, and other products to quickly dry up, which in turn makes your car’s paint more likely to scratch. This simple fact makes winter a much superior time to get your car professionally cleaned, due to the decreased likelihood of messing with your car’s exterior.

Hopefully these pro-tips give you a better understanding as to how you should go about maintaining your car’s interior and exterior cleanliness. These practices seem like small, nitty-gritty things in the grand scheme of car maintenance, but if anything, remember this. Little things add up to a big thing. I Have Foggy Headlights! What Do I Do?

Do you know what it’s like to drive with foggy headlights? They make it much harder to see in low-visibility conditions. They are also a risk to other motorists who are in the oncoming lane. Functioning headlights are a requirement for an inspection sticker in all states and have to pass a brightness test as well. Do you think your lights will pass? If not, it may be time to clear the fog from them with one of the remedies in this post.

What causes foggy headlights?

Before 1990 or so, most headlights were made of glass. The worst they were prone to were scratches. However, glass headlights were much easier to break. Manufacturers switched to polycarbonate plastic headlights because they were more durable and cheaper to make and replace. Unfortunately, the plastic lenses also degrade over time. They turn yellow and cloudy, restricting the light that they reflect.

How does the cure work?

The substances that we talk about below are all abrasive compounds. When you add the paste to a headlight with light pressure, the cloudiness is buffed out of the headlight. The same concept is used when you have cloudy paint on your car. Your detailer will use a buffer and a special compound to buff the paint until the cloudiness fades. However, an exterior buff will be followed with a wax. There is no need to wax your headlights.

How can I get rid of my foggy headlights?

As we mentioned before, the process is very simple and requires only a few tools. You’ll need the following before you begin:

  • Rags
  • A soft brush
  • An abrasive compound, such as toothpaste, baking soda (mixed with water to make a paste), or a headlight restoration kit
  • Water for rinsing

Foggy Headlights Made Bright

  1. Wash your foggy headlights with soap and water to make sure any remaining grit is off. You risk scratching your headlights if there’s grit on them.
  2. Put a generous amount of compound on your headlights. The amount will vary based on the size of your headlights, but use enough to coat your headlight. If you’re using baking soda, mix it with water to make a paste first.
  3. Using the soft brush, work the compound into the surface of your headlight in a smooth, circular motion for about 3 minutes.
  4. Wipe the compound from your headlights and rinse with water.

If this process doesn’t work, you may need to bring your car to a professional detailer for a more abrasive compound and buffing rather than using a soft brush.

Having fully functional headlights is very important. Foggy headlights reduce the amount of light directed in front of you and make it harder for oncoming traffic to judge your distance. Not sure you want to do the process yourself? Contact us today for a professional headlight restoration!
